The lamp post banners were co-produced by myself, visual artist Victoria Kortekaas and children from three local primary schools – Harehills, Hovingham and Bankside. The banners were created from images produced using collage techniques, responding to the theme of community. The collages were then photographed and digitally enhanced to create vertical designs. The banners were installed outside each school and along the main road, and images from the collages were also included on the new welcome sign on Harehills Lane.
The banners were part of a larger Leeds City Council Neighbourhood Improvement Scheme for Harehills Lane and the surrounding area, which also included two new pieces of public sculpture in painted stainless steel by artist Ian Kirkpatrick. The project, supported by East Street Arts, brought together local councillors, artists, Leeds City Council Town and District Centres, the Inner East Communities Team, The Compton Centre Staff, the local community and schools.
